X-rays from Radio Millisecond Pulsars: Comptonized Thermal Radiation
X-ray emission from many rotation-powered millisecond pulsars (MSPs) is observed to be of predominantly thermal nature. In PSR J0437–4715, the nearest MSP known, an additional faint power-law tail is observed above 2.5 keV, commonly attributed to non-thermal magnetospheric radiation. We propose that the hard emission in this and other similar MSPs is instead due to weak Comptonization of the th...
متن کاملGamma Rays from Millisecond Pulsars
We estimate the contribution of millisecond pulsars to the diffuse gamma-ray background of the Galaxy, and show that a significant fraction of the Galactic background may originate from them. A small number of the unidentified COS-B point sources may, in fact, be millisecond pulsars. It is argued that several hundred millisecond pulsars may be detectable as point sources by the GRO satellite.
متن کاملEscape from Vela X
Whilst the Vela pulsar and its associated nebula are often considered as the archetype of a system powered by a ∼10 year old isolated neutron star, many features of the spectral energy distribution of this pulsar wind nebula are both puzzling and unusual. Here we develop a model that for the first time relates the main structures in the system, the extended radio nebula (ERN) and the Xray cocoo...
متن کاملCosmic rays from Galactic pulsars
We calculate energy spectra and mass composition of cosmic rays accelerated by the galactic population of pulsars during their radio and gamma-ray phase. It is assumed that a significant part of the pulsar rotational energy is lost on acceleration of iron nuclei extracted from the surface of the neutron star. The nuclei are accelerated, at first when passing the outer gap of the inner pulsar ma...
متن کاملRadiation from Vela-like Pulsars near the Death Line
Radiation of both the outer gaps and the neutron star surface is considered for a Vela-like pulsar near the death line. It is shown that if such a pulsar is close enough to the death line, its optical, UV and X-ray emission has to increase. Using results of this consideration, it is argued that Geminga is not a close relative of Vela-like pulsars. The outer gap model of Geminga in which the mai...
